Joanna Birenbaum Joanna received her law degree as well as an Honours B.A. in Philosophy and English Literature from the University of Toronto. Since her call to the bar in 1998, she has amassed some very impressive credentials particularly in the area of Aboriginal law. She has appeared before administrative and regulatory bodies as well as Parliamentary standing committees in connection with Aboriginal and Treaty rights. She has also been involved in the preparation and litigation of constitutional test case challenges in the area of Aboriginal law. Her advocacy on behalf of Aboriginal peoples has extended beyond Canadas borders. In 1998 and 1999 she appeared before United Nations human rights monitoring bodies in Geneva and New York to advance the recognition of the right of self-determination of Indigenous peoples in international law and domestically. In 2001 she assisted Aboriginal delegations at the United Nations World Conference Against Racism in Durban, South Africa. Joanna has also published articles on Aboriginal rights and womens rights issues. Joanna also has experience in the areas of commercial litigation, environmental and employment law and public interest advocacy. And while her legal practice keeps her busy, Joanna is able to make time for community involvement and is currently a member of the Board of Directors of a Toronto womens shelter. And this past year Joanna has found a new love - 11 month-old Asher. We are very pleased that she has decided to join the firm and to help give a whole new meaning to the Birenbaum in Birenbaum, Steinberg, Landau, Savin and Colraine.
